One of the Showings I will Never Forget

People often imagine a Realtor's day filled with beautiful homes, happy clients, and shiny new keys. Sometimes that's true.

And sometimes...well...you just can't make this stuff up.

Several years ago, I was helping a wonderful family who was searching for an older home they could renovate and truly make their own. We had toured several properties, and one house had really caught their attention.

The home was occupied, so I scheduled a showing. The listing agent called beforehand and explained that the owner was out of town. His elderly father was staying there but had an appointment that morning, so the house should be empty when we arrived. Perfect! Or so we thought.

When we pulled into the driveway, my "Realtor radar" immediately started going off. There were two vehicles parked outside, and the lights were on inside the house. I called the listing agent.

"I don't think the house is vacant," I said. Then came the sentence I'll never forget.

"Please go inside and make sure the dad is okay. I want to make sure he hasn't died in his sleep."

I'm pretty sure all the color drained from my face. Years earlier, I had experienced the heartbreaking moment of finding my own grandmother after she had passed away in her bed. In an instant, every one of those emotions came flooding back. Meanwhile, my buyers were simply excited to see the house! Taking a deep breath, we cautiously entered. Thankfully, no one was there. The father was fine.

The house, however, looked like it had lost a wrestling match with a tornado. Needless to say, it wasn't the dream home my buyers had imagined. As we left, I couldn't help but think, "Well...that wasn't in my real estate training."

 People often ask Realtors if every day is different. The answer is an enthusiastic YES!

One day we're negotiating contracts. The next day we're explaining inspections. Another day we're helping families celebrate one of the biggest milestones of their lives.

And occasionally we're hoping beyond hope that we're not walking into a medical emergency.

Looking back now, I can laugh at the absurdity of the situation because everything turned out okay. But it also reminded me that Realtors wear a lot of hats—problem solver, counselor, negotiator, tour guide, cheerleader...and sometimes we find ourselves in situations we never expected. Thankfully, those moments are rare.

After twenty years in real estate, I've learned one thing for certain: No two days are ever the same. And honestly I wouldn't have it any other way.

Well, friends...today's cup of tea reminds us that no two days in real estate are ever the same!

What started as a routine home showing quickly turned into one of those moments that made my heart race and reminded me that Realtors often step into situations no one could ever prepare us for. Thankfully, everything turned out just fine—but it certainly gave me a story I'll never forget!

Life has taught me that while we can't control every unexpected twist, we can choose how we respond. A little grace, a little courage, and sometimes a little laughter afterward can carry us through almost anything.
